Review: The TomTom GO 730

The TomTom GO 730 is just a step up from the TomTom GO 720. The GO 730 has several new features, including advanced lane guidance, IQ RoutesTM, and voice address input.

The GO 730 has a 4.3" touch screen, preloaded maps of the United States and Canada, as well as text-to-speech capabilities. The text to speech technology is one of the best features of this model. One of the biggest problems with the older GPS systems is that the device would tell you to turn right in ¼ of a mile, which in some cases it isn’t always clear where exactly that turnoff is, but with text to speech technology instead of telling you that you have a right turn coming up in ¼ mile, the TomTom GO 730 will tell you to turn right at Madison Street. This feature helps to ensure that you don’t miss your turn.

Some additional features of the TomTom GO 730 are the built-in FM transmitter and TomTom's Map Share technology. Map Share allows users to make some map corrections and share them with others. You will also find that the GO 730 has millions of points of interests built into it. If you are driving down the road and suddenly realize that you are running low on fuel, the 730 can quickly tell you where the nearest gas station is.

As is often the case with TomTom products, the GO 730 is user friendly, featuring an easy interface, with many options for customizing it the way you want. Some of the TomTom GO 730 customization features include, deciding which POI categories to show on the map, POI proximity warnings, custom speed warning display, plus ABCD, QWERTY or AZERTY keyboard choice.

The TomTom GO 730 has a lot of good navigation features, including multi destination routing, as well as the capability to avoid particular streets on individual routes. With the POI feature you can find POIs on the go, and you can even assign them to custom categories. You will also have the advantage of selecting a POI category for a proximity warning.

Another useful feature of the TomTom GO 730 is the status bar at the bottom of the screen that not only shows you what your current speed is, but also what the speed limit is for the road you are traveling on. It is not unusual to find yourself driving down a road and not find a speed limit sign for several miles, so this can be very helpful.

The main problem with the TomTom GO 730 is that it doesn’t tell you if your upcoming turn is left or right, though it will indicate this with an arrow. Aside from this, it is a fantastic GPS navigation system.
